1893 Tragedy at Aberavon Beach

On the 7th August 1893 a terrible tragedy happened at Aberavon Beach. 22 people from Ystrad Rhondda on a Sunday school outing were drowned in a boating accident.
The accident happened when a 20 ft boat with 34 people capsized near the breakwater pier for the river afan. The boat was captained by brothers Willian and John Bath. Both brothers were charged with manslaughter. They were both found not guilty at trial.
